Term 4 Bookings are now open.  Places fill very quickly, especially as returning students continue their ceramic journey with us. Please take the opportunity to book in asap.

Introduction to the wheel is a 4-week session held on Monday evenings & Saturday mornings for  beginners that will provide you with the basics skills and techniques you need to throw clay on a pottery wheel.

Ongoing Pottery is for students who have completed one of our beginners’ courses or who have had previous experience. This term is 8 weeks and will take place on a Wednesday evening.

Thursday Evening  hand-building and Sculptural ceramics is a new course which goes for 8 weeks.

 Thursday Studio Drop-In session available to those who have had previous experience and wish to practice on their own. This is not a class: rather it’s a supervised studio access day. You can book in for a half or full day, on a week-by-week or monthly basis.

Covid Safety Rules will apply to all students and staff when attending the studio.  Masks (not worn below the nose) are recommended during class if deemed necessary at the time.  If you have booked and contract Covid 19 or are a close contact of someone, who has it or are feeling unwell, we can defer your attendance to another term. Please do not attend!   Thank you for your patience and understanding during these times as we navigate the fluid Covid 19 situation.

Monday Evening Introduction to Wheel Throwing Class -Beginners 1 – October 10 to 31

This course gives you the basic techniques needed to throw on a pottery wheel such as learning to centre your pieces, pull the clay up; and then trim the bases. You will be using coloured slip and texture to decorate your pieces. The studio will clear glaze the pieces deemed fit for firing. You can collect your work from the studio once it’s fired after your 4-week session. There is a turnaround time of between 2 to 3 weeks.

Once your booking is confirmed, details about our studio and what to bring to class will be sent closer to class commencement date.

Cancellation/ Refund Policy / Missed classes
2 weeks notification prior to commencement of class is required if cancelling your enrolment. A $20 cancellation fee applies
As there is a large waiting list for classes, no refunds or make up classes are available once class commences for missed classes, for change of mind, or failure to attend. In dire personal circumstances a partial refund may be considered. Conditions apply. Students must contact Director immediately to be considered.

Using the Gift Voucher
If you have received a Gift Voucher you still need to book into the program via the online Booking Form. Instead of payment details simply place Gift Voucher number in Notes section of Form. Vouchers can be purchased via email. Gift Vouchers are valid for 24 months from date of purchase.

Waiting List
Class sizes are limited to 10 to 12 persons per class and fill very fast.  Sometime places open, due to cancellation so please complete the waiting list details form. If a place opens when term has commenced you will be advised and pay either the full rate or a pro-rata rate (if you miss a class) for the remainder of Term.
The Wait list is compiled in order of date and time of your booking.

Additional Needs and Physical ability
PCAI is an accessible venue for most although there is one step to the bathroom to navigate. A wheelchair accessible bathroom is available nearby.

Using the pottery wheel can be physically challenging for some with the following conditions: arthritis in or injury to hands; neck or back pain, reduced strength or limited motion in upper arms and shoulders; later trimester of pregnancy; Hip or Foot injury.

There are ways to modify the wheel throwing experience but please consider your physical capacity prior to enrolling in a wheel throwing class. We provide many options hand building with clay, as an alternative to the pottery wheel experience. Please feel free to contact us to discuss any addition needs further, so we may be of assistance.

Materials
Your materials fee covers a bag of clay, coloured slips and glazes per student.
Additional materials such as underglaze and tissue transfers can be purchased from the studio and are not included in materials fee.
For home studio use Clay can be purchased from the studio at discounted prices however orders need to be placed in advance.

Extra firings
PCAI kilns are always full, due to large student numbers. Occasionally we can fire some extra pieces, however a cost for bisque and glaze firings for work made outside of class time is necessary. Pieces can only be fired when kiln space is available as priority is given to PCAI student work.

If an excess of materials is used during class, students may be asked to refine their work and select only the best for firing or to pay an additional fee for kiln space and materials used.

Wednesday Evening Class- Suitable for Ongoing Students – October 12 to November 30

This course is designed mainly for those wishing to continue with throwing on the wheel; and learning about surface decoration such as slips, texture and glazing techniques. It is for those who have completed a beginner’s course in wheel throwing and those with more experience will be guided in projects to develop their skills. You will be given demonstrations, and to new projects to strengthen your wheel throwing.

Thursday Evening Class- Hand Building / Ceramics Sculptural – October 13 to December 1

This sculptural ceramic course is designed by Diamondo Koutsellis and introduces you to an array of hand-building techniques for both functional and non-functional ceramics. You will also explore the many and varied possibilities available to decorate your clay surfaces using slip, glaze, and texture.
You will learn the basic ceramics building techniques to start with such as, slab building, pinch pots, coil building, the use of armatures to support your sculptural or functional pieces. These methodologies are designed to expand your understanding of the variety of techniques that can be used in hand building and sculptural ceramic process. For those seeking more advanced ceramics techniques, this will be possible as your competence and confidence increases.
Each participant will be guided along their creative journey, making work that matters to you personally; to foster your creative talents, expand your imagination, strengthen positive feelings and general wellbeing in the company of likeminded creatives, using the medium of clay.
